Playing in the NHL looks different for Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard as he enters his second season in the league.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft may already be coming off a Calder Trophy-winning rookie campaign, but he told Bleacher Report he feels more comfortable with the pace of play heading into the 2024-25 season.

“I may not be working at a crazy level, but I feel like I’m creating a lot of opportunities for myself and everyone, and I feel like the game has slowed down a little bit compared to last year,” Bedard told Bleacher Report. . “I think it’s positive.”

Although Bédard had been considered a potential generational talent since he became the first player to earn exceptional early entry status in the WHL at age 14, the 19-year-old still had some trouble adjusting to his first year in the NHL. .

One of those adaptations was figuring out how to not overdo the practice. Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson spoke about this in an interview with ESPN. Emily Kaplan Last season, he once hid Bedard’s clubs before an extra practice session to encourage the rookie to rest.

As he approaches his sophomore year, Bedard said he has adjusted to a training schedule that allows him to maintain enough energy for intense NHL play.

“I’ve been here for a few years now, you kind of have your routine and everything and you know what you need to do to feel good,” Bedard said. “When you know what it takes to feel that way and everything, I think that’s a huge bonus.”

Other aspects of playing for the Blackhawks have changed since last season. The team allowed players like Taylor Radysh and Mackenzie Entwistle to become free agents and then added veterans like Patrick Maroon and Tyler Bertuzzi this summer.

“All the new guys have been great and we bring a lot to the table, and it’s fun to build new relationships,” Bedard said.

One of those additions to the roster is veteran winger Teuvo Teräväinen, a member of the Blackhawks’ 2015 Stanley Cup-winning team who spent the last eight seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes before signing with Chicago this summer.

Since joining in the preseason, Bedard and Teräväinen have become regular linemates and one of the Blackhawks’ most effective offensive duos. In ten games, the Blackhacks have outscored opponents 5-4 when that top line has been on the ice, a positive sign for a team that is generally outscored at 5-on-5.

“I think a lot of our chemistry comes from what we saw,” Bedard said of skating with Teräväinen. “He plays at such a high level and I feel like the best part of my game is the way I think about the game. So we just complement each other… it’s been fun developing that chemistry.” “

After going 2-2-1 to start the 2024-25 season, the Blackhawks suffered a slump, suffering four straight losses in the fourth week of October.

Throughout the match the team lost with a score of 17-9. Bedard was held scoreless despite making six shots on net against his boyhood team, the Vancouver Canucks. And despite Bedard finding the back of the net twice in back-to-back games the following weekend, one goal giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead over the visiting Nashville Predators and another denying the home team the Dallas Stars a 3-0 lead. -2: The Blackhawks lost both games.

On the ice, the Hawks looked like a completely different team than last season. The final results were closer and the defeats seemed more competitive. But the Blackhawks entered the 10-game mark with a 3-6-1 record, down from last season’s 4-6-0 opening record.

“I think just stick with what you know works,” Bedard said of getting out of the slump. “Obviously our first few games started a lot slower than we would have liked. I think everything else is just knowing what we do to be our best selves, and that goes on a personal level as well. You have To know what it takes to play the best I can, I always want to get better, have a bigger impact on the game, and I hope I can do that.”

The Blackhawks got back into the win column on Monday with a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Denver.

“We had a bit of a cold spell there…obviously the plane was happy after that,” Bedard said.

Playing his second season in the NHL required Bedard to do more than just adapt to roster turnover. As Lululemon’s NHL Ambassador, he also served as the face of the brand’s recent announcement of a multi-year partnership with Fanatics and the NHL.

According to the brand, the collaboration includes developing lululemon apparel for 11 teams, including the Blackhawks this season, and then a full 32-team lineup for the 2025-26 campaign. Products will be available at Fanatics, Lids and select NHL team stores.

Bedard, who signed clothing deal with lululemon last June and signed According to lululemon, the memorabilia deal with Fanatics, which was signed earlier this month, went through product testing with the Vancouver-headquartered brand this summer ahead of a collaboration with the league. He said being part of the campaign made him feel “a little bit” like a trendsetter.

“I know a lot of guys on our team wear these things all the time,” Bedard said.

His role as a brand ambassador for the league involved posing for a modeling campaign that also featured other NHL stars such as John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mark Stone of the Vegas Golden Knights.

“It’s definitely out of my comfort zone,” Bedard laughs about modeling. “It was cool. It’s nice to do something that you’re not used to and that you’re not very comfortable with.”

Bedard finished his rookie season with 22 goals and 61 points despite only playing in 68 games due to injury. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks finished the campaign with a 23-53-6 record and 52 points, good for 31st in the league.

The sophomore forward could surpass his rookie scoring numbers with three goals and six assists in ten games. The Blackhawks will also be tasked with taking a step forward from last year’s record, starting with a few wins this week during a West Coast road trip to visit the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks. “

One game next month has special meaning for Bedard, a Vancouver resident who was sidelined with a broken jaw when the Blackhawks visited his hometown last season. The Hawks’ matchup against the Canucks on Nov. 16 will mark Bedard’s first trip to Rogers Arena as an NHL player.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to play in front of my friends and family,” Bedard said. “I grew up going to games, watching the team I supported. I’m really excited to get home and see everyone and yeah, I’m looking forward to it.”

Bedard and the Blackhawks return to action Thursday night with a road game against the 2-7-2 Sharks at 10:30 p.m. ET.
