Arby’s new fall sandwich will have you gobbling and swaying.

Arby’s new fall sandwich will have you gobbling and swaying.

We’ve reached that rare part of the calendar where Halloween finally opens the door; Four weeks before the winter holidays begin, Thanksgiving briefly takes center stage. It’s time to focus our minds and stomachs on the mammoth nutritional challenges ahead of us. While we’re trying to figure out what unexpected side dishes may end up on our tablesArby’s is offering turkey sandwiches it hopes customers will eat in November. Since 2017, the chain has offered deep-fried turkey sandwiches. This year, Arby’s is introducing the Deep Fried Turkey Gobbler as an alternative to the returning Deep Fried Turkey Club. IN press releasenotes Arby’s Chief Marketing Officer, “This year, we invite fans to celebrate the season safely, without compromising on quality, by leaving the frying to the meat experts and instead enjoying a juicy, flavorful fried turkey at Arby’s!”

So, is the new Fried Turkey Gobbler something we have Arby’s to thank for, or is it more like a deep knockoff of a good sandwich. The Takeout headed to the location closest to us to find out where the truth lies. This chew and review is based on taste, Thanksgiving, and overall appeal.

The Deep Fried Turkey is currently available at participating Arby’s locations for a limited time, or as the chain notes, “here for a good time, not a long time.” The sandwich is available to order in US stores only and supplies last until November. Be sure to check your local Arby’s to confirm hours, participation and availability.

Like the Deep Fried Turkey Club, the Gobbler has a suggested retail price of $6.49. At my Arby’s in Manhattan, the sandwich was on sale for $6.99 and $11.59 for lunch, which included golden fried side and a drink of your choice. You can place your order in the store, at the counter, or at a pickup point (if available). Orders can also be placed in advance on the Arby’s app or website for pickup, dine-in or delivery. The sandwich is customizable, meaning you can remove any of the standard ingredients included in the sandwich.

What first caught my eye was the fluffiness of the brioche bun in which the Glutton lives. The contents under the hood looked tiny—a pile of congealed pale Swiss cheese, slices of coated turkey, and a handful of crispy onion straws.. Below were soft slices of tomato, wet bits of lettuce and some white sauce tied to the bottom bun. The tomatoes screamed that they didn’t belong here, and I tossed them aside before jumping inside.

Unlike other vegetables, the onion straws were thankfully not mealy and retained a nice, textured crunch. Although the turkey was deep fried, there was nothing fried about its appearance or taste. This was fine with me as the meat was tender and juicy and looked freshly cut.

In one bite, the various elements come together perfectly to create a delicious sandwich. I’m not sure I discovered any of the all seasoningsbut more than enough herbs gave this sandwich its signature flavor. I ordered a cup of herbal paste to test it myself. It looked typical ranch sauce – a white creamy sauce studded with dots of brown and black seasonings. It had a buttery smell and an eggy taste that instantly won the approval of my tongue. What once looked like a tiny sandwich turned out to be quite powerful.

Final Thoughts on Arby’s Fried Turkey

You’d expect a sandwich with the word “Gobler” in its name to be loaded with toppings like cranberry and stuffing. However, Arby’s Deep Fried Gobbler doesn’t have much Thanksgiving ambition, but simply delivers on flavor and overall satisfaction. The juicy turkey bites deserve special praise and make me wonder why the chain only offers them for such a short period each year.

I had never tried one of Arby’s fried turkey sandwiches before and was curious how the new sandwich would stack up against the returning club sandwich. This sandwich is more simple, highlighted by strips of bacon, cheddar cheese and good old mayonnaise. The bacon certainly packs a tasty punch, and the mayonnaise does its job to further enhance the savoriness. The Gobbler stands out from the crowd with the great crunch and buttery saltiness of the crispy onion strings and a truly winning herb spread. I wish there was more of both. The good news is that you can now order the same herbed pasta at the club, so whatever fried turkey sandwich suits your tastes, Arby’s has you covered this November. While it’s essentially a coin toss about which sandwich to order with the lovingly spread herb spread, the full flavor of the sauce came to life best when I dipped my curly fries into it.
