“Luxie Lifts” is the new name for the U of L Pronghorn athletics safety program.

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorn’s annual “Safe Ride Home” athletics campaign returns this year, but with a new name.

Luxie Lifts will begin offering safe rides home on November 29th.

The annual fundraising campaign was suspended last year after problems obtaining insurance led to its cancellation.

The Pronghorns say the name change from Operation Red Nose to Luxie Lifts ends the partnership between the two, but the program will operate in much the same way.

Each team of volunteers consists of three people: a driver, an accompanying driver and a navigator, who ensure the safe delivery of people and their vehicles home.

The Pronghorns will be assisted by the university’s insurance department and will operate over three weekends leading up to Christmas, as well as hosting private parties throughout December.

“Being able to do this again in a slightly modified form is really important for us as a university, for us as an athletic department and I think as a community,” said Pronghorn Athletics Executive Director Neil Langevin. “I often feel like drink driving issues really get forgotten, especially around the holidays, and we’re very proud to put it back on the agenda.”

“The money raised through the program immediately goes back to our student-athletes and their programs,” said Pronghorn Athletics Events Manager Taylor Penney. “So we’re talking about things like extra equipment for their training, money for food and extra trips to shows.”

Luxie Lifts will be open on the weekends of November 29th, December 6th and December 13th.
