Senator Collins gives an update on the Military Crisis Intervention Bill

Maine (WABI) – October 25, 2024 marks the one year anniversary of Mass shooting in Lewiston.

While the state continues to mourn, Senator Susan Collins passed the Armed Forces Crisis Intervention Notification Act.

This was in response to investigative reports into a shooting by an Army reservist.

Immediately after the shooting, both Collins and Sen. Angus King called for an independent review by the Army inspector general to more fully understand what happened and what can be done to prevent future tragedies.

If passed, the legislation would require U.S. military services to use state-level crisis intervention laws, such as Maine’s Yellow Flag Weapon Removal Law, if a service member poses a serious threat to themselves or others.

“This would then require reporting to state, local and county law enforcement and would require the service unit to fully participate in any legal proceedings that occur as a result of the sharing of this information,” Collins said.

Collins says the bill, which King co-sponsored, is being proposed as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

She hopes the matter will be reviewed in December.
