Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre speaks at a rally in support of Donald Trump

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) – In the sea of red, white and blue at Trump’s rally at the Resch Center on Wednesday, there were also plenty of green and yellow Brett Favre jerseys.

That’s because the legendary Packers quarterback returned to the Titletown area to speak at the rally, joining a campaign event to offer his support for the former president.

“I want to respond to a comment Joe Biden made yesterday or last night that said Donald Trump supporters are trash. I can assure you that we are not trash,” Favre said. referring to comments President Biden made during the call with a Latino advocacy group. “How dare he say such a thing? When I look out, I see police officers, teachers, nurses, grandparents, students, I see everyday Americans who make this country great.”

Some Packers fans attending Trump’s rally for the first time told Local 5 News that Favre’s speech was the little extra push they needed to come out.

“I think it’s amazing, the moment I heard (Favre would be here), I knew we were coming,” Green Bay’s Tom Laurent said. “He’s my favorite player and just to see him come out and perform at an event like this is amazing.”

Laurent was one of hundreds of people wearing Packers gear for the rally. He was wearing Favre’s No. 4 jersey.

A Green Bay family continues a Belgian pie tradition.

“Having Favre here tonight means a lot and he’s one of my favorite guards,” said Sarah Loughlin, also from Green Bay. “I think he’s a man of values and he’s done wonderful things for the Green Bay community and our football here in Green Bay.”

In a speech Wednesday night, Favre said he believed the country was better off when Trump was president four years ago than it is now. He said that, like the Packers organization, Trump is a winner.

“Giving Kamala Harris four more years in office would be crazy,” Favre said. “So it’s time to bench Kamala and put in star quarterback Donald Trump.”

Favre spoke briefly, but Packers fans said after the rally that his speech resonated with the crowd.

“I even noticed Brett Favre looked a little emotional and a little teary-eyed when he came out,” said Melissa Young, a Trump supporter from Neenah. “Such a great reception and I feel like he believes in the cause.”

“It was great, I’ve always liked him (Favre) and he’s a good person too,” added Barbara Peichl, a Trump supporter from Appleton.

Current Packers running back AJ Dillon was also at the rally. Former President Donald Trump shouted out both Favre and Dillon during his speech, joking that No. 4 received a louder ovation than he did.

“Thank you Brett, what a great honor and what a great champion,” Trump said of Favre.

In 2020 Favre tweets he’s voting for Trump because he believed the former president would protect free speech, gun rights, and the police and military. The two men played golf together.

He also explained why he supports Donald Trump. on a podcast with Jason Whitlock in 2023.

While Favre’s reception Wednesday at the Resch Center was very positive, not everyone was thrilled to see No. 4 back in Titletown offering political insight.

“I’m not a big fan of his right now, so I think this just solidifies my position that I’m not a big fan of his,” said Sue Hebert of Escanaba, Michigan. who says she’s voting for Kamala Harris.

A spokesperson for the Harris campaign released the following statement regarding Trump’s rally in Ashwaubenon on Wednesday evening.

“Donald Trump is becoming increasingly unstable and frustrated, focused on himself and his grievances rather than on American families. That’s why Green Bay Republican Sen. Robert Coles joined dozens of other Republicans, independents and Democrats from across the state to support Vice President Harris. A second Trump term would destroy our reproductive rights and increase costs for middle-class families by nearly $4,000 a year—not what Green Bay voters are looking for.”

Favre spent 16 years with the Packers, winning a Super Bowl and three MVP awards. He finished his career with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

The former Packers quarterback is embroiled in a welfare spending scandal in his home state of Mississippi. According to the Associated Presshe faces no criminal charges but is being sued as government officials try to recoup wasted money.

Packers fans at the rally expressed hope that Favre’s speech at the rally could make a difference in how people vote in this election.

“I hope this helps some people who are undecided,” Laurent said.

“I hope both sides listen to the candidates and what they have to say and not to some person who wants more publicity,” Hebert said, saying she doesn’t like Trump or Favre.

Favre said he is taking part in this election cycle because of the high stakes in Tuesday’s election. Both Trump (Milwaukee) and Harris (Appleton/Milwaukee area) will hold rallies in Wisconsin on Friday.
