No as per J, endorsed in newspapers: PD Letters

Press Democrat readers weigh in on the election and more.

No according to J

EDITOR: As a former dairy water quality inspector and permit author, I recommend voting no Measure J. Environmental protections duplicate language that already exists in federal, state, and local regulations. Dairy representatives attend training on protecting water quality, bring dairies up to strict environmental standards, apply manure to fields at agronomic standards, monitor surface and groundwater, and submit annual reports.

These mostly organic dairies are located on rolling grassy hills with idyllic weather. At an average of one cow per acre, dairy cattle are rotationally grazed, receive regular veterinary care, and are “limited” only U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Personnel DefinitionThey are milked within a few minutes.

Measure J unduly places a large burden on the county, especially the Agriculture Commissioner. The most troubling part of the measure is the language protecting and indemnifying individuals or organizations that file complaints or pursue civil lawsuits.

Advertisements in newspapers

EDITOR: You may have noticed that The Press Democrat has endorsed Kamala Harris for President, citing Donald Trump’s toxic imprint on our country and our politics (“In a decisive election, choose Kamala Harris” Sunday). What you may have missed is that America’s two leading liberal newspapers did not give the same endorsement. What do you think prompted these respected publications to ignore Harris? Crime on our streets? Is our own government treating illegal immigrants better than American citizens? How much does it cost to feed a family? Fill up the gas tank? Continue sending billions of taxpayer dollars overseas to fund wars? Is the drug epidemic wreaking havoc in our country? I hope The Press Democrat can help shed some light on what specific criteria they took into account other than hating Trump.

Fueling fears

EDITOR: As everyone knows, our election system is under attack through disinformation and disinformation. Raising doubts about how elections work can discourage people and make them doubtful. I read yours October 24 article about mailing ballots. and concluded that mailing ballots is completely safe; he also instructed you when and how to do it. You printed a headline asking if it’s safe to mail a ballot in California. This headline was misleading because it called into question the mailing of your ballot. Come on, be a little more careful on the sensitive topic of elections. The headline should have read: “It’s Safe to Mail Ballots in California.” What you need to know.

DeCarli Housing Plan

EDITOR: While watching Petaluma Los Ciena City Council Candidate ForumI was shocked to hear Alex DeCarli talk about his solution to the affordable housing problem. He said that when one of his employees also rents a property owned by his family, that employee will receive a rent break. He described it as a “company town” and said Petaluma’s affordable housing plan should focus on employers providing rent discounts to their employees.

Workers in Petaluma should not have their housing tied to the whims of their employer. Accessibility should not disappear when employees cease to be useful to their employer.

How does DeCarli propose to address housing affordability for seniors? Working for DeCarli Propane past retirement age just to get a discount on your rent? His plan is unrealistic. This is not based on the experiences of people who can barely afford housing. It ignores the struggle of thousands of people who make enormous sacrifices to make ends meet because they love Petaluma. It ignores the history of company towns as tools used against the labor movement.

We need a city council member who understands how difficult it is to provide housing here. Blake Hooper has been a tenant his entire adult life, and I will be voting for him in this election.

Registration of approval

EDITOR: I am honored to subscribe to a newspaper that has the courage to support the presidential election. Neither the Los Angeles Times nor the Washington Post have the courage of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. I’m glad I moved here from Los Angeles.

Glory of Nature

EDITOR: I was so pleased to read the article “Close to Home” dated October 24 (“Hole in the Head” quietly turns 60 years old”). I was recently on the shore watching a hole as two young Cooper’s Hawks hunted at the water’s edge. One of them caught a snake. The wax myrtle bushes that had grown so well over the years were home to Audubon’s warblers, western bluebirds, and insect-catching black phoebes. I want to thank all the community volunteers who saved our coastline from a nuclear power plant and left us with a wonderful place to bird watch and witness nature’s fabulous recovery.
