Metro Transit is considering reducing tariffs in 2025

The Metropolitan Council heard a proposal to reduce fares Metro Transit buses and light rail to attract more horsemen.

What do we know

According to presentation By joining the Metropolitan Council, proponents of lower fares hope to make the following changes:

  • Adult fares will be $2 all day, eliminating peak fares of $2.50.
  • Reduced rates for youth, seniors and Medicare recipients will be $1 all day, with no peak rates of $2.50.
  • All-day tickets for adults will be reduced from $5 to $4.
  • All-day discounted passes for youth, seniors and Medicare recipients will be reduced from $5 to $2.
  • Peak Metro Mobility fares will be reduced from $4.50 to $4.00, and peak Metro Mobility fares will be in effect from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • The transit link circulation service will be provided for $1.
  • The full price of a 10-ride pass will be reduced from $20.50 to $20.
  • The cost of a seven-day pass will be reduced from $24 to $20.
  • The $90 toll, 31-day local peak fare and $5 visitor pass will be waived.

The proposal also seeks to expand eligibility for the Transit Assistance Program (TAP) from one year to two years, which would be implemented in 2025 when equitable technology is available.

Another proposed action includes a six-month pilot of “deeply discounted” fares for Metro Mobility customers to ride regional fixed routes for $0.01 from January 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025.

These potential policy changes are based on Tariff fairness analysis conducted by the Metro Transit company.

The Metropolitan Council is scheduled to vote on these rate adjustments on Nov. 13. If approved, all of these changes will take effect in January 2025.

Public opinion required

Metro Transit is also asking for the public’s help. name of the new fare payment systemwhich is expected to debut in 2026.

Officials say they are “exploring a name that represents the region, speaks to value, speed or convenience, or just something fun.”
