The Justice Department will send election observers to more counties this year.

The Justice Department said it plans to send election observers to 86 counties in 27 states on Tuesday, an increase from recent elections.

The department reported it regularly sends observers to various polling places to enforce “federal voting rights laws that protect the rights of all eligible citizens to access the ballot.” This is what has been done since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The subjects include all seven swing states, as well as a mix of red and blue states. However, officials in some red states are resisting, and officials in Texas, Florida and Missouri say federal observers will not be allowed at polling sites in their states.

The Justice Department said Civil Rights Division officials will be available throughout the day to receive questions and complaints from the public related to possible violations of federal voting rights laws on Election Day. Reports can be made via department website or by calling toll-free (800) 253-3931.

Complaints about irregularities at polling places should first be reported to local officials, the department said.
