The Puerto Vallarta bucket list you’ve been looking for

The Puerto Vallarta bucket list you’ve been looking for

Puerto Vallarta may be a beach town, but it’s anything but ordinary. As someone who is lucky enough to call this place home, I can tell you that there is much more to discover here than beautiful coastlines and all-inclusive resorts. Whether you love adventure, food or culture—or just want to kick back and relax—you’ll find plenty of ways to get under the skin of this beach resort hot spot. Here is my list of the best experiences that will make your trip to Puerto Vallarta unforgettable. These are not just tourist spots; these are the insider secrets that locals love, too.

Stroll along the Malecon at sunrise.

(Visit Puerto Vallarta)

Everyone knows the Malecon, but here’s the trick – get there early. Watching the sun rise over the mountains, bathing the bay in warm light is a tranquil way to start the day. Sculptures, sea breezes and quiet streets make you feel as if the city is just waking up with you. Believe me, it’s a completely different atmosphere than after a busy day.

Try handmade chocolate at Raíces Chocolatería.

This place is a real find for those with a sweet tooth. Raíces Chocolatería is handmade chocolate. Try the dark chocolate truffles (my personal favorite) and if you’re feeling adventurous, ask about their ice bath experience.

Hike to the hidden beach of Kolomitos.

(Visit Puerto Vallarta)

If you’re up for an adventure, take a boat to Boca de Tomatlán and then hike through the jungle to Kolomitos Beach. The hike is short but a bit challenging – well worth it when you reach this small, secluded cove with crystal clear water. I love to have picnics and spend the day snorkeling and relaxing away from the crowds. If you feel even more fearless, you can continue the hike to Playa Las Animas or even further to Quimixto.

Watch the sunset at El Solar.

Locals know El Solar is the place to go for sunset drinks. Grab a cold beer or mezcal cocktail, dip your toes in the sand, and get ready to see some of the best sunsets in the city. Usually featuring a live DJ playing low-key beats, it’s the perfect place to mingle with locals and fellow travelers.

Immerse yourself in art in the Romance Zone.

Puerto Vallarta Zona RomanticaPuerto Vallarta Zona Romantica
(Villa del Palmar)

The Romance zone is intended not only for lovers, but also for art lovers! Stroll its cobbled streets and explore its galleries. ArtWalk (October to May) is a great way to discover local talent, but even if you miss it, places like Dante Gallery open all year round. You will feel like you have entered a hidden creative world.

Watch wHales dancing in Banderas Bay

For a local, whale watching season (December to March) never gets old. Although I have seen them many times, there is something magical about watching humpback whales breach and splash right into Banderas Bay. Book a small tour for a more intimate experience, and bring your camera—these gentle giants put on a show.

Join Mr. Flamingo’s Party

Mister Flamingo is one of those places that is always a fun place to spend an evening. This open-air bar in Zona Romántica has a fun and colorful atmosphere that makes it hard not to dance. Locals and tourists gather here with drinks in hand and dance to the beat of retro pop hits. This is my favorite place for a casual but energetic night out.

Snorkeling in Los Arcos National Marine Park

Los Arcos is a must if you love the ocean. The rock formations are stunning and the snorkeling is second to none. You’ll see colorful tropical fish, manta rays and maybe even a sea turtle or two. Go early in the morning to avoid the tourist boats and you’ll feel like this underwater paradise is all yours.

Sail into the sunset

Living here, I’m spoiled by stunning sunsets, but there’s something special about watching them from a sailboat in the bay. Book a sunset cruise and have a front-row seat to the fiery colors that light up the sky over the Pacific Ocean. This peaceful, romantic and slightly surreal place is the perfect way to end the day.

Explore the hidden treasures of Kuale Island

Located right in the center of the city, Kuale Island is often overlooked but is a fantastic place to escape the crowds. Stroll through the craft markets for unique souvenirs, visit the Cuale Cultural Center, or simply relax by the river with a cup of coffee. It’s like a piece of quiet paradise in the heart of Puerto Vallarta.

Dance at La Bodeguita del Medio.

This Cuban bar and restaurant is where you go when you want to move. Their live salsa music will have you on the dance floor with a mojito in hand in no time. The atmosphere here is infectious – don’t worry if you’re not a professional; it’s all about entertainment.

Take a Taco and Tequila Tour

Puerto Vallarta’s street food is legendary. If you’re a foodie, the taco and tequila tour is a must. You’ll discover the best local taquerias, trying everything from tacos al pastor to marlin tacos. And, of course, wash it all down with local tequila and mezcal. As a local, I love showing visitors the heart of Vallarta. You can take a group tour with a company like Food tours in Vallartaor you can do it yourself from my list Best Taco Places in Puerto Vallarta.

Night escape to Yelapa

(Tripadvisor)

If you really want to get off the beaten path, take a boat from Los Muertos Pier to Yelapa, a small car-free fishing village. Spend the night in a beach bungalow and you’ll hear nothing but the sound of the waves and the occasional rooster. Head to the waterfall during the day and sample fresh seafood by candlelight on the beach at night. It’s a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of Vallarta that I always recommend to visitors.

Spend the day at a beach club

Beach clubs in Puerto Vallarta – This is a great way to enjoy the seaside. If you’re looking for a quiet day, head to a local favorite like Swell or Mantamar. If you’re looking for something a little more chic, La Palapa offers fine dining and cocktails on the beach.

Day trip to nearby Pueblos Magicos

Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by the charming Pueblos Magicos (Magical Cities) and they are just a day trip away. Cities like San Sebastian del Oeste and Mascota are ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in authentic Mexican culture and history. As a local, I head to these cities when I want a break from the beach and some mountain air.
