One person killed after being caught in an overturned boat off the coast of Redondo Beach

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — One person was killed and five others were rescued after a small boat capsized off the coast of Redondo Beach.

The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. Authorities were called to an overturned 25-foot boat about two miles offshore with five people clinging to the side.

They were able to rescue five people and bring them ashore for assessment. Their condition is assessed as stable, there are no serious injuries.

But a sixth person on the 25ft boat did not resurface and is believed to have been trapped inside.

Rescue divers went underwater and after a 45-minute search found the missing man trapped inside the boat. They pulled the man to the surface and attempted CPR, but to no avail. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear how the boat capsized.

The investigation is being led by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
