Resources to help with home repairs after Hurricane Beryl and May storms

Hurricane Beryl and the May derecho destroyed many homes in our area. Many low-income families may not have had insurance or the funds to pay for repairs.

But some programs are already ready to help.

“Back in May, when the storm hit, our neighbor’s tree fell on the house and just destroyed the entire roof,” said homeowner Otha Jackson.

Rebuilding Together Houston is currently making repairs to Jackson’s home after the May derecho knocked a tree onto her roof. She didn’t have insurance.

“You could just look up and see the sky, there was nothing there,” Jackson recalled. “Once the shock wore off, I thought, ‘OK, what do we do now?’

Rebuilding Together Houston joined the initiative with the help of contractors, volunteers and donated materials and funds.

“We were able to make a new cabinet. We did a complete electrical remodel, brand new wiring, new plugs, new circuits,” said Terry May, contractor and home inspector at Rebuilding Together Houston.

“All the sheet rock on the ceiling had to be replaced because there were bare rafters and attic space,” May said, pointing out the work that had been done.

MORE SULLIVAN SMART SENSE

“Ms. Jackson and her family experienced something incredibly terrible here, and we can turn it into a blessing by returning the home to a safe and healthy condition,” said Rebuilding Together Houston CEO Christine Holland.

Rebuilding Together Houston helps low-income homeowners who simply need home repairs, as well as those affected by Hurricane Beryl and the derecho. But the group says the increased need is limiting funding.

“There will be a lot of people affected by these storms that we won’t be able to reach because construction costs money. We haven’t run out of people to help, but we are running out of them. funds,” Holland said.

PROPOSED: Make your landscaping look great while saving money.

Holland says he hopes to help as many homeowners like Jackson as possible.

“I feel amazing that I will finally be able to bring my family home thanks to Rebuilding Together Houston. They did it for us,” Jackson said, breathing a sigh of relief.

Rebuilding Together Houston renovates homes for low-income homeowners in the East End, Third Ward, and veterans throughout Harris County.
