NC State QB trusts ‘good lord’ as he retires from football at 23

North Carolina State Quarterback Grayson McCall trusts God as he decides to retire from football at just 23 years old.

“As a child, I wanted to watch football and run with the ball in my hand. During this time, I developed a deep love and passion for the game. Thanks to God’s work and some pretty good genetics, I discovered that I could be better than all the other kids if I just kept working at it,” he general on Instagram.

“Unfortunately, my dream was cut short,” McCall wrote. “As you all know, I have struggled with injuries my entire career, but I cannot come back from this injury.”

“The 23-year-old was carried off the field during NC State’s game against Wake Forest on Oct. 5 after two defenders hit him as he scrambled in the first quarter. His helmet came off during the hit and he lost control of the ball, then fell to the ground as a defender returned the ball almost the entire length of the field,” NPR. reported.

The concussion was the second of the season and at least the third of McCall’s collegiate career.

“I did everything I could to continue, but this is where the good Lord called me to serve in another space. Brain scientists, my family and I have concluded that it is in my best interest to hang up my boots,” he added.

Although he feels like “my whole world is being taken away from me,” he feels some “sense of satisfaction” knowing that every time he played, he left everything on the field.

“I always played hard and hard because I never knew which game would be my last. I have no regrets throughout my career and that is something I can be proud of,” the defender wrote before thanking his family, friends, teammates, coaches and fans.

McCall also spoke to the media last week about his decision to retire and how he has come to terms with the decision.

“It was extremely difficult,” he said. said Media about his decision to resign. “At the end of the day, I knew it was possible after everything that happened last year and then getting hurt again in the La Tech game. From that moment on, I knew it was possible if I couldn’t stay healthy. Particularly for another head injury, I knew it was a possibility. Actually having conversations and putting them into words and things like that was hard.”

McCall suffered a severe concussion last season but decided to pursue his dreams for a future outside of football.

“When it happened last year, it was a pretty bad concussion. It was really an eye-opener for me,” McCall. said. “I see this as an educational opportunity to learn and continue to learn throughout this process. At the end of the day, I want to live a fulfilling life. I want to get married and have children one day. I want to be a football coach. I want to be a great father one day. Without a healthy brain, none of this is possible. I love this game so much, but it comes down to something more.”
