Sayreville officers shoot two dogs to stop attack on 10-year-old boy

Sayreville police officers shot and killed two dogs to stop an attack on a 10-year-old boy, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney.

Police responded to a 911 call on November 4 around 11:20 a.m. at the Knights Inn regarding an animal attack. A family member who contacted police said their child was attacked by family dogs. When police arrived at the scene, they noticed the boy being mauled by dogs.

“In an effort to stop the attack on the child, police officers shot the dogs, and the officer was wounded and slightly injured by a ricochet,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit also assisted in the investigation, which the prosecutor’s office said is “active and ongoing.”

Both the 10-year-old boy and the injured police officer were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Both are listed in stable condition.

Police ask anyone with information or surveillance footage in the area to call Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3316.
