Democrats and Republicans are locked in a war for control of the upper chamber. Democrats were on the defensive—Republicans only needed to gain two new seats or one seat and the White House to regain control. Big wins in Ohio and Montana could decide the matchup. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs each midterm and presidential election year. As with the Senate, control of the House will come down to several tight races. Experts warn that it could be several days before the election results are announced.

Some states, such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, cannot begin processing absentee and mail-in ballots until Election Day.

The results of the 2020 election, won by President Joe Biden, took four days, compared with 35 days for George W. Bush to win the White House in 2000.
