QuickCheck: Did fishermen in Penang rescue a dolphin?

As places to go become fewer and fewer due to the ever-increasing human presence in natural habitats, encounters between humans and wildlife are becoming more and more regular.

Because of the drama of such meetings, news tends to spread quickly, especially if photos or videos are included.

It was recently reported that fishermen rescued a dolphin in Teluk Kumbara, Penang. This is true?

VERDICT:

true

This is actually true: the incident happened at 6pm on Tuesday (November 5) after one of the fishermen received a call from his friend who spotted the mammal in the sea.

“Around 5:30 p.m., my friend called me and we mobilized five fishermen to help us bring the dolphin, which measures about 150 cm, back to the sea,” said fisherman Shamsuar Hashim, 46, when contacted.

“The whole process took about 40 minutes; we pulled the dolphin using a fishing net to deeper waters, where it swam away safely.

Chamsuar said this is the first time a dolphin has been rescued alive, as there have been several cases where it has died after becoming entangled in fishing nets.
