A minority of fans want to renovate Old Trafford

A poll has found that the majority of Manchester United fans prefer the new stadium to the redeveloped Old Trafford.

More than 52% of more than 50,000 season ticket holders, members and club executives chose new construction, compared with 31% who supported renovating the existing stadium.

The rest were undecided which option was better.

No timeline has been set for a final decision, but the PA news agency understands the findings of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force will be fully considered in the spring or summer of 2025.

The task force is believed to have focused discussions on building a new 100,000-seat stadium rather than renovating the existing site.

It was thought the club’s owners and the task force, which includes former United defender Gary Neville, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and World Athletics president Lord Coe, might make a decision by the end of this year.

However, United said only an “options report” would be provided by the end of the year.

“Municipality Sessions”

Rick McGug, the club’s director of fan engagement, said the club was pleased the survey “received the highest number of responses in the club’s history.”

He added: “We know how important our home is to fans and we need to listen to them and get all their views and ideas to build the world-class stadium they deserve.”

“We can look at the results from different perspectives to see if our season ticket holders think about anything differently than, say, our official members.

“And if younger fans have different views on older fans, that understanding is incredibly helpful.”

The club is holding meetings at Old Trafford this week to provide fans with more information about the various options and plans being discussed.
