Kenya Department met with warning of heavy rainfall in Nairobi and other regions: ‘Storms may occur’

  • Nairobi is among the regions that the Kenya Meteorological Department has included in its list of areas where heavy rainfall is expected.
  • According to the forecaster, rains from November 5 to 11 in some areas will be accompanied by storms.
  • The department, however, informed that during the preceding period, some areas will experience sunny days and low temperatures at the end.

Where will there be heavy rains?

In his forecast, the forecaster noted that strong flows will hit Nairobi. West Kenya, Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South East Lowlands, Coastal and North East Kenya from Tuesday 5 November to Monday 11 November.

The agency predicted isolated storms in some regions.

However, most areas will experience heavy rain mixed with sunny and dry conditions.

Throughout the period, daytime temperatures in some regions, especially northeast and northwest Kenya, are expected to rise above 30°C, the forecaster said.

At the same time, overnight temperatures will fall below 10C in parts of the Central Highlands and Central Rift Valley, with forecasters warning of cooler evenings.

The weather forecast comes months after the country experienced devastating flooding caused by heavy rains.

It was in May this year that a natural disaster resulted in loss of life, destruction of property and destruction of homes.

How many Kenyans have died due to floods?

According to government data, as of May 7 number of people killed by flood and other consequences of heavy rains amounted to 238.

At the time, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said 75 people were still missing after being overwhelmed by floods in various parts of the country.

Mwaura reported that 47,000 households were forced to leave their homes due to floods throughout the country, with Nairobi district leads the way, with 164,000 people reported affected.

He added that some 600,000 students were unable to return to school as many institutions either housed displaced people or were destroyed, with toilets flooded and roofs blown off.
