Michigan football player Colston Loveland is a John Mackey Award semifinalist

Michigan’s 2024 offense was far from impressive, but tight end Colston Loveland remains one of the best playmakers in all of college football. It’s no surprise that he was announced as a semi-finalist for the John Mackey Award on Tuesday afternoon. Loveland earned Mackey’s end-of-week award back in Week 1 and most recently in Week 9 against Michigan State.

The award is given to the nation’s most outstanding tight end. Michigan has only had one tight end win the award, and that was Jake Butt in 2016.

The junior tight end leads the Wolverines with 49 receptions for 523 yards and four scores. Loveland missed an entire game with injury this season, but was a reliable target in the passing game no matter who was playing quarterback. Loveland had 649 receiving yards last year as a sophomore, a mark he’s on track to surpass in 2024.

Here are some quick hitters on Loveland’s Michigan career. MGoBlue:

• All-Big Ten selection (first team, coaches; second team, media, 2023)
• Offensive and special teams Rookie of the Year (2022).
• Two-time writer (2022-2023).
• Started 37 games at tight end with 22 starts.
