Here’s what Mike Woodson said after Indiana’s win over SIU-Edwardsville.

Indiana coach Mike Woodson met with the media following the Hoosiers’ 80-61 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday night. Here is the full transcript of his interview.

QUESTION. “I know you’ve always seen McKenzie’s explosiveness and ability. 13 points in four minutes. 31 per night. What do you think of his offensive game?

MIKE WOODSON: “I thought he was the only one who played really well offensively tonight. I mean, I thought we came out with great intentions. The ball went early. We were just tired from an offensive standpoint in terms of moving the ball, making the extra pass.”

“This team was able to hold on. A lot of it is because we just didn’t implement. I needed to improve us in this regard. I think our defense isn’t that bad. Made too many offensive rebounds.”

TO. “A couple of weeks ago you said you wanted the team to get off to a great start. Did you have any problems with execution in offensive training? Have you trained well in the previous weeks?”

WOODSON: “No, I think we had pretty good training. The ball just didn’t move. Our bodies didn’t move. Take away their offensive rebounding, we’re really good defensively, but we just couldn’t keep them from getting shots. They’re not that big of a team, which should force us to block shots and get better in that area.”

TO. “McKenzie’s scoring, block, steal, improved play and energetic defensive play. How did you see him this offseason with his approach and effort?”

WOODSON: “No, he’s still learning. I mean, I think today was one of the best games he’s had since he’s been here. He was pretty solid defensively.”

“I look at what Kanaan Carlisle did from a defensive standpoint. Gallo came in and defended, giving us nine assists. There’s enough in this team to spread the wealth throughout the team if the guys play the right way. I don’t think we played right tonight.”

TO. “You had 16 turnovers, but it felt like some of the guys were trying to push the pace, going too fast. Do you think that number is going down a bit as this team gets used to playing a little faster? ”

WOODSON: “Yes, I think so. Miles, he had five turnovers. Three of them were where there was simply nothing. He tried to separate two and three guys and lost the ball. These are things that can be fixed. He has to have the patience to get us into something and then know what to do, what he needs to do offensively himself. It’s still a work in progress to get him to play the right way and be a true point guard.”

TO. “As for Miles, what might be the next step with him?”

WOODSON: “Again, I mean, good point guards, great point guards, they figure out how to make the players around them better, and then they figure out how to dunk the basketball.”

“He can score the ball, there’s no doubt about it. He showed this in practice. I don’t want to ever take that away from him. But I want him to play the right way and run our offense when he has the ball.” he has the ball in his hands and makes the right moves when the time comes.”

TO. “Trey has always been your jack of all trades. Given the role he now plays from the bench, can you tell me how much you appreciate that he is willing to accept his role and excel in it?” ‘

WOODSON: “Again, in many ways we can’t help but take him out right now because he can’t play big yet. He’s missed so many summer games, coming back from summer games up until this point.” We’re just slowly trying to take him with us rather than burn him and hurt him again.”

“I mean, his minutes went up a little bit today. He played 17 minutes, but he played longer tonight. So we’ll see how he feels tomorrow when he wakes up and comes in for treatment. key.”

TO. “What do you think your team’s offensive identity is now?”

WOODSON: “Don’t know. Still looking. I know we can dunk the basketball. Some guys aren’t really hitting shots the way I expected them to. Over time they will begin to fall.”

TO. “Obviously in Indiana you always carry the weight of high expectations. How do you manage that with your players, prepare them to handle those expectations?”

WOODSON: “We can’t hide from this. Expectations are good. We expect this. So I expect our players to perform at a high level. “We play 40 minutes a game, no matter what, no matter who we play.”

TO. “The 16 offensive rebounds for them – was it bad rebounding or bad blocking?”

WOODSON: “No, I just give them credit from a team point of view. They wanted it a little more than we did. This is something that cannot happen. I have to go back and break this film down and put them in front of the film. and try to get better.”
