Black Ops 6 developers wanted to save on graphics? Contrary to appearances, this is not so obvious.

Some studios approach game development with passion and strive to ensure that every aspect of the game is well designed, providing players with an unforgettable experience. Some are more detached from their projects, and the degree of their development is questionable. Developers can be forgiven for occasional stumbles (bugs, glitches), but what about artificial intelligence?

The use of artificial intelligence is now commonplace in the gaming industry, including to improve graphics and automate computational processes. However, very obvious and unexplored cases of its use still cause horror. In such situations, players feel deceived and robbed, and this is not far from accusing developers of wanting easy profits and skimping on quality. A good illustration of this phenomenon is the discussion of the game. Black Opera 6where fans accused the banner graphics used in it of being created using artificial intelligence.

Digital Investigation

Fans were outraged by seemingly innocent details that they felt did not accurately reflect reality. However, the community cannot come to a consensus whether AI was actually used in creating the graphics or not. The situation is complicated by the fact that in the discussion, along with users who immediately began to criticize the greed of the developers, there were also several people who argued that the accusations were exaggerated.

I’m an artist, very familiar with the work of artificial intelligence, and have helped people with DMCA claims and the like. This doesn’t sound like AI at all to me, at best someone has digitally tracked the AI. It looks hand-drawn, with the skulls looking like they could have been rendered with a stylized filter. To me it just looks like simple concept art, I don’t see anything that stands out as AI. The light source is also constant, which is usually a clear sign of AI.

The comment did not remain unanswered for long:

Many of the details in the middle picture don’t make sense. If they have moved on to the image rendering stage, it cannot be a thrown away concept because some areas are even redrawn from even the finished work. And then, if it’s at the rendering stage, why are there unfinished parts? This doesn’t hold water – they move on to rendering, but some areas are still unfinished. And I assure you, if we get a larger, high-resolution version of them, all the brush strokes won’t make sense at all.

Other arguments for using AI include a large number of visual artifacts, poor proportions of the pistol and even the absence of a trigger. On the other hand, it is difficult to agree with either side without a shadow of a doubt: some see the details as clear evidence of AI, others see them as flaws or conscious choices by the artist. This shows how difficult it is to distinguish graphics created with AI from those created without it. The line between mastery and automation is indeed becoming thinner.
