One-hour Emmerdale special to highlight the voices of domestic violence victims

The hour-long Emmerdale special will focus on the voices of victims of domestic abuse as a long-running storyline on the issue comes to an end.

Belle King, played by Eden Taylor-Draper, suffers from coercive control and abuse at the hands of her manipulative husband Tom King (James Chase). ITV soap for several months. The series, based in the Yorkshire Dales, reveals that Belle will find the strength to report Tom to the police in the final chapter.


The conclusion will be made in December, when a special hour-long episode will feature “the real voices of domestic violence victims and survivors.” Emmerdale Producer Laura Shaw said: “When we first set out on this journey, we knew we wanted to show domestic violence, coercive control and manipulation in all its forms.

“The privilege we have in a drama like Emmerdale is that we can show the reality of a situation like Belle’s over a longer period of time to authentically reflect what so many people go through in real life. life every day. We knew from the start that Belle would need some closure for Tom, and we know our Emmerdale audiences always look forward to seeing our villains get their comeuppance.

“We don’t want to spoil the outcome of this story or reveal what will happen to Tom, but of course Belle will be in a much better place this Christmas.”


During the storyline, Emmerdale experimented with using an episode showing three potential futures for Belle, saw the character’s dog also become a victim of abuse, and worked with domestic abuse charity Refuge and New Beginnings Peer Support on how to approach this problem.

Lindsay Oliver, chief executive of domestic abuse peer support service New Beginnings, said: “When Emmerdale explained that they were hoping to include real-life testimonies from domestic abuse victims and survivors in these scenes, we knew it would be the best way for them to close your eyes sincerely. this story.

“We’ve been working on this story since 2023, when Emmerdale first approached us about portraying a close-knit, controlling relationship on the show. We’re glad that Emmerdale highlighted and continues to showcase this issue until the very end.


“And we hope these final episodes continue to raise awareness about domestic violence, relationship control and that there is help.”

At the 2024 National Television Awards (NTA), Emmerdale took home the prize for best series, with Taylor-Draper also receiving a nomination.

Minnie’s dog, named Piper in the show, also won best pet at the Inside Soap Awards in September, while best actress went to Taylor-Draper.
