Brighouse shoppers and businesses criticize parking fee hike

Samuel Garfurth, who had only recently moved to Brighouse, agreed that the fee should have remained at 40 pence.

He added: “There’s not much parking here anyway. The last thing the city needs is for people not to come here to shop.”

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for transport, Sarah Courtney, said: “We understand that increasing parking charges has never been popular, but pricing is the most effective way to manage kerbside space. A recent study found that outdoor seating in Brighouse is more expensive and occupancy remains high on most days.

“Due to this ongoing demand, we concluded that parking charges could be used to better manage pavement space in the city and encourage the use of car parks in and around the city centre, where data showed that even at peak times there were over 100 free places.”
