Truck Driver Arrested After Vehicle Damages CTE Tunnel Ceiling

SINGAPORE – A 55-year-old man was arrested on November 8 after driving at a high altitude, damaging the Cairnhill Circle entrance to the Central Expressway (CTE) tunnel and causing the ramp leading to it to close.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, police said they were alerted to an accident involving a truck on the CTE towards Seletar Expressway (SLE) around noon on November 8.

They added that while no injuries were reported, the driver was arrested for illegally driving a heavy vehicle over 4.5 meters in height without being accompanied by a police officer or a deputy.

The Land Transport Authority said the accident damaged some electrical and mechanical equipment on the tunnel ceiling.

However, no structural damage was caused to the tunnel, it added.

Restoration work continues.

In a video posted on social media before the crossing closed, dashcam footage of cars entering the tunnel showed multiple cables hanging from the tunnel ceiling. You may also see the lane indicators flickering.

A stationary yellow truck can also be seen with the name of A&T Waste Haulage Services printed on the side.

Police investigations are ongoing.
