A longtime Kennebec County sheriff’s deputy will retire at the end of the year.

AUGUSTA — After four decades in law enforcement, Chief Deputy Al Morin of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office will retire in January. Lieutenant Chris Reed will take his place.

Sheriff Ken Mason said. Facebook post on Thursday morning. He said Morin served the community honorably during his time with the sheriff’s office.

Maureen will retire on January 1, 2025. The next day, Mason will appoint Reed as his deputy.

“He’s just had a long career, over four decades, which is really two careers (in law enforcement),” Mason said of Morin. “He was a pleasure to work with and helped make this agency what it is today, a tremendous service to Kennebec County.”

Mason said he chose Reed as the new assistant principal because of how well they work together.

The reading began at the sheriff’s office in 2018 after he retired from the Augusta Police Department.

“He’s a professional and I love working with him,” Mason said. “He did good things and gets along with everyone. I believe in him and there will be no bumps in the transition because he is already here and knows how to work with me.”

Mason, 62, was re-elected Tuesday to another four-year term as sheriff.

“I’m turning 38 and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “We have everything thought out, and I can take a vacation and not worry about work.”
