Former President Donald Trump was named president-elect following the November 5 election. The decisive victory in a deeply politically divided country prompted celebrations on the right and expressions of despair on the left.

But some social media users said dozens of people were taking the news particularly hard: “There have been 2,038 suicides reported today since Donald Trump won the election.” Instagram post from November 7 read.

We saw this statement published on November 6th on X by the Dom Lucre account, which spreading disinformation to. The user attached the photo, attributing the data to the World Health Organization’s suicide prevention program.

In an email, the World Health Organization told PolitiFact that this claim is incorrect and that it does not have a daily suicide tracker. The agency said it tracks mortality data by collecting annual mortality reports from member states’ civil registration and vital statistics systems.

The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on suicide goes back to May 2024. reported the following preliminary figures:

In a subsequent post, X “Dom Lucre” said that the statistics were taken from worldometers.info. When PolitiFact visited the page on November 8, we saw that the number of “suicides today” had gradually increased from 1,560 to 1,848 in about two and a half hours. Worldometer attributed this supposed data to the WHO page, which impossible to find. This data does not include location or demographic information.

Claims that 2,038 suicides were reported on November 6 following Trump’s election victory are unfounded. We rate this as false.
