Ian Somerhalder thinks his acting career is ‘in the rearview mirror’ (Exclusive)

Ian Somerhalder believes his acting days are behind him, but there is one thing that might interest him in returning to Hollywood.

By talking exclusively to PEOPLE on Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards Gala on Saturday, October 26, 45 years old Lost The alum opened up about leaving the entertainment industry behind when he and his wife Nikki Reed moved from Los Angeles to start farming.

“I think it’s in the rearview mirror. Yes,” Somerhalder said about his acting career.

“Well, I don’t know, we got the rights back to V warbut I just don’t know how the hell we’re even going to make a TV show,” he added, referring to the one-season Netflix sci-fi thriller he and Reed starred in a few years ago. “We are building three companies. while raising children.”

Reed and Somerhalder tied the knot in 2015 and since then they have two children, Bodhi7 and boy1. The couple spoke candidly about their dedication to agriculture, healthy living and protecting the environment, which is one of the reasons they decided to attend the EMA gala, which awards film and television projects that raise public awareness of environmental issues .

Last year the couple co-founded Absorption Company is a high-tech nutritional supplement brand available online and in Erewhon stores.

Twilight Star Reed, 36, shared similar sentiments about a possible return to acting, telling PEOPLE at the Oct. 26 event, “I’m not making any definitive statements about anything. I don’t look at anything.”

“I now work over 90 hours a week. I run a company full time and just started another one, a joint venture with Absorbing Company,” she shared. “And I just can’t imagine being able to channel my energy without the door being closed.”

Somerhalder has previously spoken candidly about his retirement from the entertainment industry, even doing so while speaking with PEOPLE in September to celebrate his 15th anniversary The Vampire Diaries and 20th anniversary Lost.

The retired actor recalled telling his management of his desire to leave the business, telling them, “Hey, this is the only thing I’ve ever known that’s ever supported my family, and I’m walking away from it.” At this peak I could go out and do anything, but these partnerships mean so much more to me.”

“I say this with all modesty, with all due respect, but I would rather do this than spend two months in some city filming a TV show away from my family or driving them back and forth,” he continued.

“Once you get to a certain level, you say, ‘OK, I want to focus on family, the future of agriculture, food, energy, and more,'” Somerhalder added. “I don’t need to chase awards.” and anything that will make me feel better.”
