Lions player Jameson Williams clashes with police for carrying gun in car just 2 weeks before PED ban

About two weeks before he was suspended for violating the NFL’s performance enhancement policy, Jameson Williams almost went to jail.

Detroit Lions The wide receiver and his brother, who was driving, were pulled over. During the stop, two weapons were found in the car, one from each brother.

Williams’ brother has a concealed weapons license (CPL), but Williams does not. Williams’ brother told officers both guns belonged to him, but Williams admitted the other gun belonged to him.

The third-year player told the officer he had played for the Lions several times, but the officer said that would not affect whether he would be arrested.

Williams said he carries the gun “for protection” because he lives in Detroit. He was eventually handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser after being told he would be arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.

Eventually, after the sergeant made several calls to senior officials, Williams was released. The background of the sergeant’s phone was the Lions logo. according to camera footage.

The sergeant told arriving officers he was “so angry” at both of them, although Detroit Police Chief Michael McGinnis said it was said in a “cheerful way.”

After the lieutenant told the sergeant the brothers could be released, the sergeant told the lieutenant he was a “(expletive) hero” and thanked him. That’s when Williams was uncuffed and released without further problems.

The police department is now investigating why Williams and his brother were released.

“I believe there was probable cause for an arrest and he was arrested by the trooper,” McGinnis said. “And because of that, he should have been taken to the Detroit Detention Center and processed.”

“I want to know whether the fact that this man was a Detroit Lions player played a factor in the decision?” he added, saying Police Chief James White is “livid” about the ordeal.

The Lions said in a statement that Williams “immediately advised us that he was a passenger at a routine traffic stop on October 8th.

“We have discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of everything we know,” the statement said. “We understand that he was released without incident or charges. We now understand that the Detroit Police Department is reviewing this issue again. Jameson has retained an attorney and we will not comment further out of respect for the legal process.”

Williams serving a two-game suspension for violating the rules on the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The Lions didn’t miss him too much over the weekend, scoring 52 points against the Tennessee Titans.

This is not Williams’ first suspension. He missed six games last season violation of the league’s gambling policy.
