End of the season, pumpkin competition winners

PRINCE GEORGE – Pumpkins were judged at the Prince George Farmers Market in Scott Park on Saturday, October 26th. In preparation for the Prince George’s County Great Pumpkin event, 20 children had the opportunity to take the following free Virginia Collaborative Extension (VCE) classes: Pumpkin Planting with hands-on seed planting and the life cycle of a pumpkin.

VCE, a partnership between Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, provides educational programs for Virginians.

The pumpkin competition categories included: “Heaviest”, “Thickest”, “Most Unique Shape” and “Most Beautiful”. Age groups: 12 years and younger and 14 years and older. The judges were multimedia journalist Christy K. Higgins of The Progress-Index and Prince George’s County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Floyd M. Brown Jr., representing District 1.

Only three pumpkins were entered into the inaugural pumpkin competition held during the Market’s Autumn Festival and sponsors Prince George Master Gardeners, Prince George Farmers Market and VCE – Prince George were delighted to see them.

VCE – Prince George Volunteer Master Gardeners Janet Fisher Callis, Gloria Carter, Betsy Amin and Lynne Pelman worked together to try to weigh the pumpkins. However, due to technical problems with the scales, they decided to exclude the heaviest category of pumpkins.

Two Prince George residents walked away as winners and received accolades, ribbons and certificates. Bentley Pugh, 3, won the Most Beautiful Pumpkin Award, and Gail Hines, owner of Silver Oak Farm and vendor at the Prince George’s Farmers Market, won the Most Unique Shape and Most Beautiful awards for her two pumpkin creations. . Scott Reiter, Prince George’s VCE agricultural extension agent, signed each certificate and posed for the winners.

Prince George’s Farmers Market in Scott Park

During the Fall Festival, kids found hidden mini pumpkins, played games, and received free candy. Families purchased produce, meat, eggs, jewelry, homemade jams, honey, flowers, cinnamon rolls, crafts, barbecue sandwiches and more.

Several people received special recognition. Ava and Mary Stell, members of the Power of Produce (POP) club, were the season’s winners for the highest level of participation. They attended 19 of their 25 dates at the Prince George Farmers Market. POP Club will return next year on the market’s opening day, Saturday 3 May.

For excellent attendance in the 2024 season, Lingerfelt Farms and AsteRicks Candle Co. secured free retail space for the 2025 season. The 2024 Market season was sponsored by the John Randolph Foundation, Prince George Farm Bureau, Inc. and CMA dealerships in Richmond.
