List of free and discounted rides offered in metro Detroit on Election Day

With early voting underway and Election Day less than a week away, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is sharing resources to ensure voters can get to the polls and cast their ballots.

Benson released a list of nonpartisan organizations and companies compiled by MichiganVoting.org that provide free or discounted rides to early voting sites and on Election Day.

Free transportation to the polls is possible thanks to the passage of HB 4568, which lifted the ban on rental vehicles to travel to polling places.

“It is important that transportation does not prevent eligible Michigan citizens from accessing the ballot box,” Benson said. “I am glad that legislators worked to lift the ban on transportation to voting sites, and I am grateful to the organizations that provided transportation to citizens who need it to vote. These services will be needed by many, especially senior citizens and voters with disabilities, to ensure that every eligible voter can be heard in this election.”

Here are free and reduced transportation options for Michigan voters:

Free rides for Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park residents.

A Detroit bus company will offer free rides to Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park residents on Election Day. To book a ride, people can visit Detroit Bus Company website.

“Voting is one of the most important actions we can take as citizens,” said DBC owner Andy Didorosi. “We will also be fulfilling our duty as a local transportation organization if we can help even a handful of Detroiters of all faiths travel on Election Day who otherwise would not be able to do so. In my opinion, this is a victory.”

Detroit Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is also offering free rides to and from the polls on Election Day for residents of these three communities, as well as residents of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods. Voters can request a ride by calling 888-328-4283 or emailing [email protected].

Free rides for metro Detroit residents

Detroit Downriver APRI is offering rides to metro Detroit residents through November 5th. Attractions are available to residents of the following localities:

  • Allen Park

  • Brownstown

  • Detroit

  • Ecorse

  • Inkster

  • Lincoln Park

  • Oak Park

  • River Rouge

  • Riverview

  • Southfield

  • Southgate

  • Taylor

  • Trenton

To request a ride, voters must fill out online form on the Detroit Downriver APRI website.

Free rides on the SMART bus

SMART, serving southeast Michigan, is offering free bus rides all day on November 5th.

“We are proud to support our community’s right to vote by offering free rides all day on November 5th,” said Dwight Ferrell, SMART CEO. “This initiative aligns with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s efforts to expand voter access and participation throughout Michigan. At SMART, we believe in promoting civic engagement and ensuring transportation is never a barrier to voting.”

Free rides on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CATA) bus

The Capital Region Transportation Authority, which serves the Lansing area, is offering system-wide free rides starting today through November 5th. The free rides are for people participating in any voting-related activity, such as registering to vote or transferring a ballot to a trash can. box.

To receive a free ride, a person will simply need to notify the bus driver of their intention to vote.

“The Capital Region Transportation Authority has been providing free rides on Election Day since 1988, and we have worked diligently in recent years to build on that legacy,” said CATA Board Chairman Nathan Triplett. “With voters approving Proposition 2 in 2022, establishing their constitutional right to vote early in all state and federal elections, the importance of public transportation in promoting greater voter participation and improving equity and access to the ballot box for all eligible voters has become more significant than ever before. Our core competency of providing safe and reliable transportation to the public is especially important to those who do not have or cannot afford transportation. Transportation should never be a barrier to participation in democracy.”

Discounts on Lyft and Uber rides

Voters can also get 50% off a single trip or polling location on November 5th using the discount code: VOTE24.

Uber also offers a 50% discount. goes to polling stations on election day. The voter will receive this offer when they use the Go Vote tile to book a trip.
