On Prime Video release reveals:

X-Ray Recaps is a generative AI-powered feature that creates concise, easy-to-digest recaps of full seasons of TV shows, individual episodes, and even episode snippets, personalized down to the minute you watch. Whether you’re watching a new episode for a few minutes, mid-season, or taking a break from the series and need a refresher, X-Ray Recaps will provide short text snippets of key moments, character-based plot points, and more. details that can be accessed at any time during viewing.

Prime Video further notes that “guardrails are also used to ensure spoiler-free summaries.” These fences must be strong. Because if this AI starts giving spoilers to people, the age of AI will end faster than expected.

You can take a look at an example of such a Prime Video AI summary below.

Notably, this is a very simple hash of what happened in the episode. Most TV reports written on the Internet are aimed at add some criticism or opinion to them— offer the user something beyond a simple overview of the main points of the story. But the results here are a much more rote retelling of what happened in the series. Adam Gray, VP of Product at Prime Video, notes that this new AI TV Recap feature “directly addresses a common problem customers have when streaming content: forgetting where they left off.”

As a general rule, we don’t like it when content based on generative artificial intelligence approaches creative properties, and we prefer to see episode reviews from people who have watched and know the series. Not to mention, these summaries can help try to capture the experience of a user who stopped midway. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens next. Beyond artificial intelligence, it will also be interesting to see whether this form of repetition proves useful for those who can’t remember what they’ve already seen. If you don’t remember who Nathan and Ingrid are, would you find a summary like the one above helpful? Again, human input can go a long way in this.

When will these AI reviews be available to everyone? X-Ray Recaps is currently in beta and will now be available to Fire TV customers in the US, “with support for additional devices coming by the end of the year.” Users can get X-ray reviews for all Amazon MGM Studios original series, such as Daisy Jones and the Six, Mr and Mrs Smith, The Wheel of Time, And Boys.
