Lyles snubbed as Tebogo leads athletics’ top honors after impressive season

  • Botswana sprinter Letsile Tebogo has been nominated for the top prize at the 2024 World Athletics Awards after an impressive season.
  • The Olympic 200m champion is competing for top honors with five other athletes, while American sprinter Noah Lyles failed to qualify.
  • The 21-year-old sprinter is not the only African to reach the final round of the award: Ethiopia’s Olympic marathon record holder also made it to the final round.

Letsile Tebogo has been nominated as one of six finalists for the top honor in 2024. World Athletics Awards, but American sprinter Noah Lyles did not qualify.

Lyles missed out on the finals after failing to make it to the final round of the Athletics Athlete of the Year competition.

The Olympic 100m champion was among the early nominees in his category alongside Rai Benjamin, Emmanuel Vagnoni and Grant Holloway, but failed to advance to the next round after the first voting process was completed.

Tebogo leads nominations for World Athlete of the Year

According to IOLTebogo and Norwegian distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen are the two finalists for the Men’s Athletics Athlete of the Year award.

Ingebrigtzen also had a great season, winning gold in the 5000 meters at the Olympics after a poor performance in the 1500 meters.

The Norwegian athlete will look to surpass Tebogo for the award as the Olympic 200m champion was crowned best male athlete at the 2024 ANOC Awards in Portugal.

Tebogo and Ingebrigtsen, finalists in their category, are also in the running for the Athlete of the Year award, which includes both track and field athletes.

The two Athlete of the Year nominees will compete against the likes of Brian Daniel Pintado, Militiadis Tentoglou and Mondo Duplantisand Tamirat Tola for the award.

The winner will be determined by voting and the voting process will close on Sunday 10 November 2024 at 23:59 CET.

The winner of the award among the top six athletes will be announced on Sunday, December 1, 2024.

Lyles sends a message to Tebogo

Brief news also reported that Noah Lyles sent Tebogo a congratulatory message. after losing to him in the 200m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Olympic 100m champion admitted the Botswana athlete had a difficult year following the death of his mother but still won.
