Morning Update: Could the Patriots Be Sold? Here are the names to look out for. — 8:15 am

Although predicting what direction a team might go at the NFL trade deadline, with a 2-7 record and inside the track for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Patriots selling as the Tuesday afternoon deadline approaches.

Over the past week, head coach Jerod Mayo has been coy about discussing trade speculation surrounding his team, saying much of the talk has been “bullshit” and “disappointing.”

“To me, this is stupid,” Mayo told Scott Zolak during a pregame radio interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub on Sunday. “A lot of this stuff is nonsense. It’s frustrating sometimes because you always want to be very honest with the player and let them know; they hear it.

“If a message comes out that is 100 percent false and you have to discuss it with that person, it just takes more time and more space.”

Given the way things have unfolded throughout the season, it’s notable that wide receiver KJ Osborne was clearly a healthy player against the Titans. And while fellow receiver Tyquan Thornton was on the injury report in the days leading up to last weekend’s game, the decision to make him inactive could be a sign that the pass catcher is on the trade market.

On Monday Mayo said Making Osborne the healthy kicker against Tennessee was a personnel decision, saying the coaching staff’s job was to “put players on the field that we think will help us win this game.” The head coach praised Osborne for his “energy” on the sideline during Sunday’s game, especially when it came to his reaction after catching DeMario Douglas in the third quarter.

“A guy like that, it depends on the team,” Mayo said of Osborne, who has seven catches for 57 yards in six games. “This is not about him as a person. And we need more people like him.”

It won’t be easy to see how general manager Eliot Wolf can negotiate his first trade deadline in charge of the Patriots, but it’s worth noting that he’s not shy about trading potentially impactful defensive players. In August he traded pass rusher Matthew Judon to Atlanta for a third-round pick in 2025. And late last month, New England traded outside linebacker Joshua Uche. send him to Kansas City for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft..

Other veteran defenses whose names have been linked to a possible trade include veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones and cornerback Kyle Dugger.

Last month, Jones was asked about his thoughts as the trade deadline approached. One of the final pieces of the Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl LIII, he was philosophical about what the future held.

“Control what you can control” He said. “I just come to work every day, just try to do the same thing, the same thing I’ve always done. Whatever happens, happens. I just love going to work and playing football.”

“The guys there know pro football at this time of year,” Mayo said in late October. “From our point of view as an organization, we’re always trying to get better, whether it’s bringing in players or adding through subtraction. We have to look both short term and long term.”

The Patriots have already made moves ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline by sending linebacker Joshua Uche to Kansas City, so what else could be in store?

Coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday he’s not sure how active the Patriots will be. However, if they are interested in selling, there are several players who could attract interest. Names to watch are cornerback Jonathan Jones, nose tackle Davon Godchaux and receivers KJ Osborne and Kendrick Bourne.

“The guys there know pro football at this time of year,” Mayo said. “From our point of view as an organization, we’re always trying to get better, whether it’s bringing in players or adding through subtraction. We need to look both short term and long term.”

Saints fire head coach Dennis Allen – 3 p.m.

On Monday, the 2-7 Saints fired a head coach in a rare move this season. moving on from Dennis Allen after the team suffered its seventh straight loss on Sunday.

The final straw came in a Week 9 loss to the Panthers, as Allen became the first head coach fired by the Saints since the Benson family bought the team in 1985.

Cardinals add Broncos linebacker – 2:30 p.m.

The Cardinals agreed to acquire linebacker Baron Browning from the Broncos, bolstering the team’s passing trade ahead of the trade deadline.

The Cardinals will send a sixth-round 2025 draft pick to the Broncos. The deal is awaiting physical conclusion.

Browning, 25, is in his fourth season in the NFL after being selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He has 9½ career sacks, although he had none this season. The Cardinals have several other key players from Ohio State, including left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Browning played in just five games this year, missing time with a leg injury.

The Cardinals (5-4) are riding a three-game winning streak, which puts them in first place in the NFC West. Arizona’s pass rush has been a sore spot for much of the season, although the defense did record six sacks in Sunday’s 29-9 win over the Bears.
