(CNS): A search and rescue operation off Cemetery Beach in West Bay on Monday ended safely yesterday when a woman caught in a strong current while paddling was brought back safely to shore. Police said they received a report that two women were surfing but one was unable to make it back to shore. The search involved RCIPS including helicopter, HSA, fire service, Cayman Islands Coast Guard and members of the public on private vessels.

The helicopter located the woman approximately four miles offshore and directed the CICG vessel to her location. She was brought on board the vessel without incident and taken back to shore where she was assessed by emergency services and found to be in good health.

“We would also like to express our sincere thanks to members of the public, in particular the crew of the Cayman Aggressor IV, who assisted in the search,” RCIPS said after the rescue.

Police urged the public to take appropriate precautions before venturing out into open water. People should always check sea conditions and stay aware of any marine warnings or advisories. It’s also a good idea to wear brightly colored clothing that contrasts with the surrounding water, and to carry a means of calling for help, such as a cell phone, in a waterproof container.

As always, your number one priority when participating in any activity on the water should be safety and respecting your limitations.
