WVU clinched the Sun Belt regular season title after a tie with Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV (WCHS) — West Virginia University tied Marshall 0-0 in the Mountain State Derby on Tuesday to become the Sun Belt regular-season champion.

The Mountaineers took first place and Marshall took second. WVU won the title thanks to its 5-0-4 record compared to the Herd’s 4-0-5.

Marshall played a much more offensive game, taking 13 shots to WVU’s 7, but shots on goal were only 3-2.

The scoreless tie will allow both teams to focus on the championship tournament, with the Mountaineers hosting Georgia Southern on Nov. 10 and Marshall hosting Old Dominion the same day.
