Will the election of President Donald Trump affect this year’s Oscar race? (VOTE)

2024 presidential election Donald Trump caused shock in Hollywood after many famous artists came out in support of the vice president Kamala Harris‘ campaign. The Nov. 5 election came right in the middle of the 2025 Oscar race, sparking debate about how it could impact the 97th Academy Awards.

Politics tend to get intertwined with Hollywood’s biggest night, but whether it can impact specific races or not depends on the specific year and the films being controversial. There are several films that may interest voters this year, the most obvious being Ali Abbasi“The Apprentice,” the story of how a young Donald Trump (played by Sebastian Stan) began his real estate business in the 1970s and 80s in New York City with the help of notorious lawyer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong).

The Apprentice has already generated significant awards buzz, but will the election results bring even more attention to the controversial biopic? Earlier this year, Trump’s lawyers issued a cease and desist order to Abbasi in an attempt to block its distribution in the United States. This ultimately came to nothing and the film opened in theaters last October. The president-elect’s legal team ultimately backed off their threats to sue over what they called a “concoction of lies” and a form of “foreign interference in American elections.”

There are several other films that deal less directly with Trump himself, but focus on the communities impacted by rhetoric and political advertising. Star of the series “Emilia Perez” Carla Sofia Gascon plays a Mexican cartel boss who hopes to retire from his business and disappear forever, becoming the woman he always dreamed of being. This meets many of the criteria discussed throughout this year’s political campaign. PBS reports. Pro-Trump groups spent about $95 million on ads last month, more than 41 percent of which were anti-transgender.

“Brutalist” stars – Oscar winner Adrian Brody stars architect Laszlo Toth, a Holocaust survivor who flees post-war Europe in 1947 to reclaim his legacy and witness the birth of modern America. Immigration and the American Dream are certainly hot-button issues that could be highlighted in an Oscar race that’s already looking like a nail-biter.

Stars of the series “Sing Sing” Colman Domingo as Divine G, a man imprisoned in Sing Sing Prison for a crime he did not commit. He finds purpose while performing in a theater troupe with fellow prisoners in a story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. Prison reform has long been a political topic of debate on both sides of the aisle. Kim Kardashianwho was recently took a photo with the Sing Sing star Clarence McLean at the Academy Museum Gala famously met with President Trump in 2018 to discuss criminal justice reform, asking the president directly to seek a replacement Alice Marie Johnsonserved 21 years for a non-violent drug offense. If Oscar voters want to lean toward a more optimistic story, “Sing Sing” could prove useful.

There’s also the possibility that voters will simply want to escape into fantasy land, avoiding politics entirely and enjoying the thrill of movie magic. If so, look to epic films like Dune: Part Two, Gladiator 2 and Wicked to grab your attention.

At the Academy Awards following President Trump’s final election in 2016, Moonlight disappointed La La Land for Best Picture, showing that the Academy was more focused on uplifting marginalized communities than on Hollywood dream. Could there be a similar trend at the 2025 Oscars? Vote in our poll below.
