Kearney Elementary School principal to retire at end of school year

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) – Kearney Public Schools said respected Northeast Elementary School Principal Katherine Gundersen plans to retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year.

Gundersen, who has served as director since 2009, leaves a legacy of dedication and excellence in education.

KPS Superintendent Jason Mundorf said, “Mrs. Gundersen’s talent, leadership and unwavering dedication to Northeast Elementary will be greatly missed. Kathy was a fierce advocate and supporter for her students and staff and worked tirelessly to create a collaborative, supportive and positive learning environment for all students. She was a champion for Kearny and Northeast Public Schools and we will miss her!”

Gundersen commented on her career by saying, “I went into education because I enjoy working with children and I have a passion for helping children become successful citizens in our society. Watching students grow and achieve their goals has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Gundersen received a bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College, a master’s degree from Peru State College and an administrator’s certificate from Emporia State College.
