Colin Farrell finishes a marathon pushing a friend in a wheelchair

Colin Farrell pushed his friend Emma Fogarty, who lives with a rare skin condition, the last 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon in her wheelchair on Sunday.

The 48-year-old star ran the marathon to raise funds for DEBRA, an Irish charity that supports people living with the incurable genetic condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB), also known as butterfly skin, like Fogarty.

Fogarty, who turned 40 in June, is Ireland’s oldest surviving person with the condition. Sky News. She was born without skin on her left leg and right arm, and the slightest touch can cause excruciatingly painful blisters, so 80% of her body is covered in bandages.

People with EB lack the necessary proteins that bind the layers of skin together, so even the slightest friction or movement can damage the skin, causing it to rip, tear or blister.

Fogarty was born with the most severe form of the disease and was not expected to live past 40, as most people with her type of EB do not live past 35, Sky News reported.

She and Farrell initially hoped to raise €400,000 ($430,000) for DEBRA, but are now aiming to raise €1 million. DEBRA website shows that they are more than three-quarters of the way there.

Farrell and Fogarty appeared on Ireland’s The Late Late Show earlier this month, where the Oscar-nominated actress said that for every decade of her life, he pushed Fogarty 1 kilometer, or a total of 4 kilometers.

When asked what it meant to have Farrell by her side for the race, Fogarty replied, “I don’t trust anyone more than you to push me in the last 4K.”

The pair crossed the finish line of the 26-mile race just before 1 p.m. local time. According to Sky News, Farrell completed the entire course in just over 4 hours.
