The fire that destroyed a barn near Kinburn on Monday started when a car caught fire in the barn, according to the Ottawa Fire Service.

Firefighters were called to the farm on Kinburn Side Road northeast of the village shortly after 1:15 p.m. when a 911 caller reported a car was on fire and there was fuel and other flammable materials in the barn.

The barn was filled with antique carriages and sleighs, according to the fire department. There were no animals in the barn, and all the people left it safely.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke and flames coming from all four sides of the barn. An aerial ladder was installed from above to fight the fire. There are no fire hydrants in the area, so firefighters used tankers to bring water from the Carp River to the scene.

The barn began to collapse at 2:12 p.m. At 16:08 the fire was declared under control.

An excavator was called to the scene to extinguish the fire, and a fire investigator arrived at the scene.
