Illinois man arrested for attempted murder after shooting on I-65 in Indiana: police

An Illinois man was arrested on attempted murder charges 12 hours after a shooting on Interstate 65 in Indiana.

A 911 caller reported the shooting to Indiana State Police around 8:15 p.m. Friday near mile marker 215 in Jasper County.

According to State Police, the caller said someone shot him while he was driving south and the suspect continued driving in the same direction.

Police said the caller also provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in locating the vehicle on I-65 near mile marker 166 south of Lafayette, police said. Officers conducted a felony stop, detained three people inside the vehicle and recovered a 9mm handgun.

One of the three people arrested, Dwayne Lumont Johnson Jr., 19, of Country Club Hills, Illinois, was charged Saturday morning, according to state police. He has been charged with:

  • Attempted murder is a Level 1 felony.
  • Aggravated Battery is a Level 3 Felony.
  • Deadly Weapon Battery – Level 5 Felony (2 counts)
  • Criminal recklessness is a Level 6 felony.

Johnson was taken to a hospital in Lafayette and then to another facility in Indianapolis for treatment of a gunshot wound, police said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Two other detainees were released without charge.
