Vice Presidential Candidate Makes Interesting Statement About Minnesota Twins Legend in I

A week before Election Day, presidential and vice presidential candidates wrap up their campaigns.

On the Democratic side, Vice President-elect Tim Walz of Minnesota recently appeared on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stu Gotz.

And in a clip posted on Tuesday’s show, Waltz talked a little baseball about his hometown. Minnesota Twins.

“He’s a Hall of Fame catcher. He’s a Hall of Fame first baseman. Can they stage it twice?”

@Tim_Walz criticizes @StuGotz790s’ Joe Mauer about not getting into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.

Okay, let’s break this down piece by piece. Stu Gotz says he thinks Mauer is a Hall of Famer, but he doesn’t agree with being voted out on the first ballot. This is not an unpopular opinion, as several people during the election last year felt the same way.

Mauer was a very productive player, hitting .306 in his career and playing for 15 years. However, only about nine of them were truly Hall of Fame worthy (2005-2013).

As a catcher, Walz is right. Mauer was one of the best players at the position throughout those nine years. He was named to the All-Star team six times, won three Gold Glove awards and three batting titles. He also received the MVP award in 2009.

However, why would Walz imply that Mauer is ALSO a Hall of Fame first baseman? This is wrong. Mauer played 603 career games at first base and was primarily a first baseman between 2014 and 2018. In those five seasons, he never won a Gold Glove, never made an All-Star team, and was never named Most Valuable Player.

During those years, he hit .278 and hit just 38 home runs.

The entire conversation was probably more fun than serious, but we take all baseball claims seriously, so we had to investigate.
