LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Spending a day at our “Fighting Together” Community Advocacy Fair on Channel 13 gave me the opportunity to directly connect with many local residents, as well as connect them with community organizations that are there to help.

From the Attorney General’s Office to the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, the Metro Citizens Review Board, etc., we had quite a few organizations providing assistance and advice to our local community.

I’ve heard of many of your concerns, from HOA situations to Formula 1 affecting your local business. But there was one topic that a lot of people brought up that we didn’t have a booth for, but it’s still on the back of a lot of people’s minds.

A woman named Sandy said she had lived in Las Vegas for 18 years. After hearing about our fair, Sandy said she wanted to talk about an issue that was on her mind.

“My only concern is the health care, which I would like to see improved here,” Sandy said.

In one of my recent “Darcy, what’s wrong?” In my segments, I reported on local concerns about long wait times to see doctors and the need to train and retain more health care workers in Nevada.

We did have representatives from the healthcare industry at the fair: Solutions for Change, which provides low-cost and in some cases free counseling and therapy services to the uninsured and underinsured. But the help they provide goes far beyond that.

“You may be food insecure. You may need legal help, medical help, or how to find medical help. We don’t just provide therapy, we also provide comprehensive services that help people,” said Nick Matthews. with Solutions for Change.

Sandy said that while there was no quick fix for her problem of waiting months to see a specialist, she was grateful for the opportunity to learn what more urgent care Las Vegas had to offer.

“Everyone was so warm and welcoming and kind, and I had fun just getting to know people in our community, so that was really rewarding,” Sandy said.

As we continue our mission to fight for what’s right for locals, we know that what happened at the Local Advocacy Fair is just the beginning. We still have a lot of work to do, and we are doing it together.
