Groom’s plea to death of Limerick groom on his wedding day

A DRUGMAN has pleaded guilty to careless driving causing the death of a Limerick man hours before he was due to walk down the aisle.

Shane Harty, 21, from Tola Park, Shannon, pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before Judge Colin Daly at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court last week.

The late Miles Harty, 20, of Priory Yard, Askeaton, died as a result of a road traffic collision on the R518, Cragmore, Rathkeale Road, Askeaton, at around 1am on Saturday 21 August 2021.

It is clear that the accused and the victim are related.

Prosecuting barrister Lily Buckley BL, who was instructed by state lawyer Brendan Gill, said the victim’s parents and fiancée were in court.

“This is a very tragic case. The deceased was due to get married on the day of the incident,” Ms Buckley said.

Judge Daly said this was a very difficult case and expressed his sympathy to the family for their loss.

Shane Harty, who was wearing blue jeans and a red shirt, said he was “guilty” when a court clerk charged him with careless driving causing death.

Brian McInerney SC, instructed by solicitor Michael O’Donnell, represented Shane Harty during a brief procedural matter.

Mr McInerney said his client was best man at the wedding.

Shane Harty is due to be sentenced on Monday 18 November. He was placed on bail.
