Remember the “alien” signal sent by the Mars orbiter? This has just been transcribed

A simulated “alien” signal sent NASA orbiter circling Mars was finally cracked after months by a father-daughter duo, revealing a cosmic coded message.

NASA collaborated with the SETI Institute and media artist Daniela de Paulis on a project to simulate sending alien message to Earth to observe how humans could interpret such otherworldly code.

“alien” message was developed by a small group of astronomers and computer scientists with support from the European Space Agency.

The encrypted message was transmitted from NASA’s ExoMars orbiter orbiting the Red Planet in May 2023, and the SETI Institute invited the public to decipher it.

For months, thousands of people tried to decipher the alien code, sharing ideas on Internet forums.

The message consisted of mysterious white dots arranged in five groups on a black background.

After running simulations for “hours and days on end,” father-daughter duo Ken and Keli Chaffin finally cracked the code—but what it conveys is still a matter of debate and debate.

They found that the “blocks” interpreted from the signal had 1, 6, 7 or 8 “pixels” representing the atomic number of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen.

The duo successfully discovered that the “alien” message contained in the ExoMars signals symbolizes amino acid molecules, which are the building blocks of protein.

They described the message as a symbol of cell formation, the European Space Agency noted in a blog post.

“My decoded message is a simple image with five amino acids displayed in the (hopefully) universal form of organic molecular diagrams, and a few one-pixel dots appearing between the clusters and molecular diagrams,” the father wrote, sharing an image of his discovery.

Now that the message has been deciphered, the next step in the project is to interpret it and determine what it was intended to convey—an interpretation that remains open.

“Could this sign of extraterrestrial intelligence be a recipe for destruction or a message of peace? Are we ready for first contact with an alien civilization? ESA noted, adding that people can share their ideas online.

Participants should also include a description of the method they used to interpret the message so that it can be replicated and verified.
