Three charged in murder of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Reckling – The Oakland Press

Four months after Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Reckling was shot and killed in Detroit, two Clinton Township residents and one Detroit resident have been charged in his death.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the investigation leading to the charges was extensive and complex, and that the three defendants are part of an elaborate car theft ring spanning Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Reckling, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was fatally shot in Detroit on June 23 while reportedly working undercover tracking down a Chevrolet Equinox stolen that day from the Red Oaks water park in Madison Heights. It is reported that at some point the car suddenly stopped, its passengers got out, and one of them began shooting. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard called it an “ambush.”

Arraignments on the following charges are expected this afternoon in 36th District Court:

• Raymone Raleigh DeBose, 18, of Clinton Township, is charged with murder of a peace officer, receiving and eluding a motor vehicle, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, theft of a motor vehicle and organizing a criminal enterprise. .
• Marquis Lamar Goines, 18, of Detroit, is charged with felony accessory after the fact, receiving and eluding a motor vehicle, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, theft of a motor vehicle and criminal conduct. .
• Kareem Blake Moore, 18, of Clinton Township, charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, receiving and eluding a motor vehicle, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of felony firearm, criminal conduct. .

Reckling had been investigating the car theft case since learning about it in November 2023, Worthy said. She described the scale of the venture as “breathtaking.”

Reckling, a married father of three who had a fourth child at the time of his death, was 30 years old when he was killed.

“Hero”

“Deputy Reckling was a hero, an absolute hero. He was doing what we all love to do and that is keeping our communities safe,” said Detroit Police Chief James White. “He came to work like the rest of us, any day of the week, he put his life on the line. He was in our city chasing someone for stealing a car, stumbled upon something much bigger than he even thought – which would be revealed later – and made the ultimate sacrifice.”

White said, “Today we pray and wish that the healing process can begin (for Reckling’s loved ones) now that we have people held accountable for this heinous act.”

Bouchard said Reckling was truly a hero and spoke about the challenges faced during such a lengthy investigation that ultimately led to the arrests. “(But) the most important thing is to do this right and prepare prosecutors to hold these people accountable,” he said.

Reckling “was one of those people who touched so many lives, he was a superstar in so many ways,” Bouchard said. Murder, he said, “leaves so many voids not only in family, friends, community, but also in the agency. It’s a gut punch when you lose someone in the line of duty, especially someone like Brad.”

Bouchard went on to say, “There is no healing from (something) like this, but you learn to process it. And you figure out a way to take it one step further day by day… start this process knowing that the people who did this on purpose will be held fully accountable.”
