Is John Wick really dead? 5 Important Clues He’s Still Alive

John Wick died tragically at the end of his fourth film. But is the character really dead? Here is proof that Baba Yaga is still alive.

Exactly 10 years have passed since then John Wick was the first to kick, punch, and shoot into movie theaters, launching a truly great action film franchise in the process.

It has also become one of the most profitable, with the four John Wick films grossing over $1 billion worldwide, and spin-off films and TV show.

Since each subsequent film grossed more than the previous one, it was a surprise when the main character was killed off in Chapter 4. But the following clues suggest that John may not fully dead.

We don’t see John Wick die

John Wick was shot several times during his duel with Kane. John Wick Chapter 4and then the character falls onto the steps of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica.

But we don’t see the character take his last breath. And movie tradition says that if you don’t see your main character die on screen, chances are he’s not completely dead.

This episode is followed by a scene where Winston, the Bowery King, and John’s faithful pit bull stand at John’s grave. But they are alone, and the grass is long, suggesting that a long time has passed since his funeral. This means we didn’t see John’s death or his funeral.

-Where do you think he is? asks the Bowery King. “Who knows,” comes Winston’s answer, vague enough to give us hope.

The dog knows

During the aforementioned conversation, John’s dog suddenly looks away as if he has noticed something. His ears also perk up when he makes excited dog noises.

But is this a confession? Has the nameless pit bull spotted someone he loves? Is John watching his friends from some secret location near the grave?

Dogs played a key role in all four Jehovah’s Witnesses films, so what if John is alive, the dog would know.

“Death” is the only way out

At the beginning of Chapter 4, John travels to Morocco to talk to the Elder about his future. But the news is not very good. “None of us can escape who we are,” he is told. “And no one will escape the Table.”

Expanding on this theme, The Elder adds: “The only way John Wick will find freedom and peace, now or ever, is through death.”

“I know,” John says. Did Wick just get the idea to fake his own death? It’s entirely possible that he then shoots the Elder, setting the wheels in motion for an emotional climax on the steps.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Chad Stahelski revealed that he was filming an alternate chapter four climax where John Wick is very much alive.

“We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the film,” Stahelski. explained. “So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audience we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

So the thought process was there and the footage does exist and could be used in the sequel if a fifth chapter is released. By the way…

Chapter 5 is inevitable

To celebrate John Wick’s 10th anniversary, Stahelski gave an extensive interview about the franchise to The Hollywood Reporter, in which the topic of Chapter 5 was brought up.

Wanting to find ways to expand the franchise that didn’t cheat the cliffhanger final moments of Chapter 4, the writer-director said he has a lot of ideas for how Wick’s adventures could continue.

“Is it possible to make (John Wick 5)? Of course there is, whether it’s for money or for creativity.” said Stahelsky. “God, I’ve already had three or four versions of John Wick 5 in the last three years.”

So expect John Wick to return sooner rather than later.
