It must be released, and then if another player wins the hole, he will become the owner of the Rabbit. This game is played on both nines. Thus, the player who owns the Rabbit after the ninth hole wins the front nine (any set dollar amount agreed upon before the round). The new Rabbit game begins on the back nine, and the owner of the Rabbit after the 18th hole wins the back nine. If no one has the Rabbit after the ninth, the game simply continues until 18 and the owner of the Rabbit after 18 wins both bets.

Variations: There are several ways to change this game if you like. One way is to allow the Rabbit to be stolen. So if Player A wins the Rabbit on hole #1 with a low net score, then Player B wins on hole #2, Player B is now the owner of the Rabbit, skipping the “freeing the Rabbit” step.

The other option will actually make it much more difficult to obtain the Rabbit after defeating it. You can add “legs” to the rabbit. Let’s say player A wins the first and second holes straight away. Player A will now be in possession of both of the Rabbit’s legs, meaning that the other players in the group will have to win two holes at once to first free the Rabbit before he is available for capture again. This rewards the player who starts quickly and becomes the leader, like the Rabbit in a race.
