FCT Committee approves N33.24b for new infrastructure projects in Abuja

The Federal Capital Executive Committee has approved contracts totaling N33.24 billion for projects to be completed in Abuja next year.

The approval was received at the 9th meeting of the committee in Abuja, chaired by the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike. Major contracts include improvements to transportation accessibility, fuel supplies to key facilities, and significant upgrades to airport infrastructure and faculty housing.

The Minister’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Chidi Amadi, stressed the administration’s commitment to providing key services to residents of the FCT.

“These contracts reflect our commitment to ensuring that the FCT meets the critical infrastructure needs of its people,” Amadi told reporters after the meeting.

Dr. Chinedum Elechi, Mandatory Secretary, Transport Secretariat, said N7.22 billion has been allocated for the construction of access roads to the Kugbo and Mabushi bus and taxi terminals.

Elechi explained that the construction of these terminals, which were initially contracted for construction in May, was progressing well, necessitating the need for additional access roads.

“It became clear that an access road was needed to connect the terminals to main roads and facilitate traffic flow,” he said.

The road project awarded to Planet Projects Ltd. is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.

Fuel purchase

  • To support the facility’s core operations, the committee approved the purchase of 120,000 liters of autogas oil (diesel fuel) and 40,250 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS) for the Whoopa Basin wastewater treatment plant. Contract awarded to Safah and Fresh Ltd. worth N2.92 billion, covering 12 months supply to keep the plant operational.
  • There was also a sanction of N638,550 for 400,000 liters of diesel for the Lower Usuma Dam Water Treatment Plant to ensure continuity of water supply in the FCT.

EFCC Road

  • In further pursuit of regional accessibility, the committee approved N7.83 billion for the construction of an access road to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Academy located in Giri area.
  • The project, awarded to Levant Construction Ltd., is expected to be completed within nine months.
  • Additionally, the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja, will receive ten new staff quarters under a N2.19 billion contract awarded to Austlinks Energy Services Ltd.

“This will provide vital housing for staff and improve the functioning of the institution,” said Mr. Shehu Ahmad, Executive Secretary of the FCT Development Authority.

Airport infrastructure

To support Abuja Airport infrastructure, the committee approved a contract worth N9.88 billion to Julius Berger for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Bill Clinton Road leading to the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The contract also includes upgrades to Presidential Wing facilities including the hangar, taxiway and apron. The project is expected to be completed in six months, with Mr Ahmad noting:

“This will increase the capacity of our airport and facilitate smoother government operations.”

Office equipment of the legal secretariat

To improve operational efficiency, the committee allocated N605.94 million for the purchase of office equipment, equipping the new office of the Legal Secretariat and the purchase of trucks.

The Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Legal Secretariat, Mr. Gardia Bawa noted:

“These resources are critical to the smooth functioning of our department and the efficient delivery of legal services.”
