Pumpkins smashed at a composting event in Hudson River Park

WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — It’s that time of year when pumpkin smashing is a hit at Hudson River Park in Manhattan.

Organizers encouraged everyone to bring jack-o’-lanterns and Halloween decorations, and then the pumpkins were broken down into small pieces.

The event was not just a training session, it had a purpose. The pumpkin pieces will be composted and used in city parks.

Hudson River Park’s community composting program has already collected 71,000 pounds of compost this year to support sustainability efforts throughout the park.
