Tory votes fall sharply in leadership election

Emma Levin, deputy director of polling company Savanta, said: “Turnout fell by nine and 14 points in the 2022 and 2019 elections respectively, and this is the result of our summer survey of Conservative councillors.

“One in seven councilors said they would not vote in the last two contests and it appears many councilors were also unhappy with their proposed choices. If Badenoch fails as leader, there will likely be renewed debate about the party’s selection process.”

Ms Badenoch emerged as the winner with the third highest level of support from fellow Conservatives. in the final vote – her share of 34.7 percent is higher than only Ms. Truss’s 31.6 percent in 2022. Iain Duncan Smith received support from 32.5 percent in 2001. Two years later he was removed by MPs and replaced by Michael Howard.

However, Madame Badenoch really attracted more parliamentary approvals during the race. The day before the results were announced, British bookmakers on average gave her an 83 percent chance of winning.

She was the bookmakers’ favorite for much of the race, but Jenrick made gains ahead of the Conservative Party conference. Mrs Badenoch had better odds than her opponent on 62 per cent of days since then. Sunak steps down as leader.
