Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce coach criticized Turkish referees after victory over Trabzonspor

Jose Mourinho condemned the standards of refereeing in Turkey after his Fenerbahce side scored the winner in the 102nd minute to cap a dramatic game against Trabzonspor.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager ran onto the pitch and tried to slide off his knee as Sofyan Amrabat’s late stoppage-time goal clinched a 3-2 win on Sunday.

However, Mourinho was unhappy that home team Trabzonspor were awarded two penalties – both after consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR) – and believed his side should have taken the penalty before Amrabat scored the penalty.

The 61-year-old even wondered why he came to Turkey.

In a detailed conversation with broadcaster beIN Sports, Mourinho criticized the actions of referee Oguzhan Cakir and VAR representative Atilla Karaoglan.

“I blame the people at Fenerbahce for bringing me here,” said Mourinho, who took charge of the club in June. “They only told me half the truth.

“They didn’t tell me the whole truth, because if they had told me the whole truth, I wouldn’t have come.

“But using half the truth and my guys, we fight our opponents and the system.”

Mourinho added: “He (Karaoglan) was ready to give two penalties which the referee didn’t give and then he drank Turkish tea when it was a clear penalty for us but he didn’t give it.”

With the win, Fenerbahçe moved into second place in Turkey’s top flight, five points behind leaders Galatasaray.

“Atilla Karaoglan was the man of the match,” added Mourinho.

“We didn’t see him, but he was a judge. The referee was just a little boy who was on the field, but the referee was Atilla Karaoglan.

“He went from being the invisible man to being the most important person in the match.

“I think I speak for every Fenerbahce fan – we don’t need him anymore.

“We don’t want him to be VAR. We don’t want him on the pitch, and even less so in VAR.”
